As British Airways, along with American Airlines, can both be booked using Avios and can fly a passenger from London to Dallas, it made sense for us to open a British Airways Executive Club account.

This free account allowed us to start collecting reward points when spending day to day expenses in different ways, and the start of our journey to collect enough points for a return luxury flight to Dallas!

160,000 Avios were required for two people to fly this dream business class return flight, if we could achieve the credit card minimum spend!

Solo travellers could take advantage of the same methods explained here, and take this same flight, for just 80,000 Avios Points!

Collecting points requires a mindset change. We needed to find ways to boost our points every chance we could. We did this by:

• Applying for the AMEX BA Plus credit card (1.5 points for every £1 spent) – and the initial 30,000 Avios bonus
• Purchased as many every day items as possible using the credit card (groceries, fuel, gifts, tickets, breaks, etc…) but ALWAYS paid off on time before any interest was charged
• Used the BA Shopping Portal to increase point spend, especially with gifts, clothes shopping, hotels and breaks
• Met the AMEX BA spend requirement of £10,000 in 12 months for a 2-4-1 Flight Voucher (note: this has risen to £15,000 as of November 2024)

In just 15 months, the target of 160,000 Avios was surpassed, reaching a total of 164,984 Avios points.

Most of the Avios were earned by switching monthly spending from a current account to the BA Amex credit card, collecting the 30,000 Avios points sign-up bonus, and using the card for as many purchases as possible—while always paying off the balance on time to avoid fees and interest.

Additionally, 39,861 Avios points were earned through the BA Shopping Portal on hotels, short breaks, holidays, gifts, new clothes, and an insurance plan.

A standard fare for two Business Class tickets to Dallas was quoted at £18,677.58. By using the Amex 2-4-1 voucher, we booked both flights for 180,000 Avios and £900 in taxes and fees—a cash saving of £17,777.58, or 95%!

The day finally arrived!

We headed off to the airport to enjoy the sumptious delights and relaxing surrounding of the BA Business Class Lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5, with a glass of wine and some cooked meal, before heading to the plane and taking to our 6ft lay flat seat in our cosy Business Class cabin where shortly after take-off we enjoyed a welcome glass of champagne, a full 3 course meal and afternoon tea!

We spent time in the heart of Dallas at the Grassy Knoll, as well as visiting the Fort Worth Stockyards, and watched the busy morning Cattle Run session as well as watching Bull Riding in Billy Bob’s – the largest Honky Tonk in the World!

Dallas is an incredible city to visit, offering a unique blend of rich history, modern attractions, and vibrant cultural experiences.

All of this is available to everyone who spends the time to learn how to collect points and enjoy everything business class (or even First Class) travel has to offer!

Our spend on this trip, including hotels, meals, taxis etc.. are points rewarded through our BA Amex credit card, and bookings made through the BA Shopping portal, so already we have started to collect points for next years dream trip!
